Ellicia’s Situation

Ellicia came to Tallahassee in May after a divorce and losing her home. She has resided at the Kearney Center since May 16th. Ellicia found a duplex and put $425 down for the deposit, in order to hold the residence. However, now she does not have enough money for the rent after paying the deposit. Ellicia is seeking $425 to pay the rent for this money and then she can move in immediately. She will be able to pay the rent ongoing.

Where did you grow up and what did you like about your home town?

I grew Bayside, NY in an upper middle class neighborhood, it was beautiful. I went to school until 11th grade and became pregnant, I had to drop out to care for my son who is now 36. I completed my G.E.D in 1999 in Quincy, FL. The thing I liked most about growing up in Queens was playing handball in the park, going to dance class and attending church.

Do you have any siblings or children? Tell us a little about them.

I have 2 older brothers, an older sister and 1 younger brother. My oldest brother passed away from skin cancer in 2001. We were very close. He served in the army for nine years. I have two children, my son is 36 and lives in Bayside, NY, where I grew up. My daughter is 21 and lives in West Palm Beach, FL. She works as a C.N.A. and also works at Wal-Mart. I taught her right from wrong, I taught her to learn from my mistakes. I did a great job raising my children.

What is your favorite movie and why?

My favorite movie is a “Beautiful Mind”. The main character had severe mental illness and he was able to overcome it and still went on to become a Professor at Princeton. It was based on a true story. My favorite scene was when the main character was able to realize that what he was seeing in regards to his Schizophrenia wasn’t real.

What is your favorite genre of music? Which artist?

My favorite type of music is Gospel music. It helps me feel better and it encourages me, it helps me go on. My favorite artist is Yolanda Adams. “Lord Speak to Me” is my favorite song by her because I need God to speak to me in times like these, when I don’t know what is going to happen. It helped me to calm down inside and wait for god to guide me, and here he is, guiding me.

What is your favorite kind of food?

My favorite foods are mashed potatoes and steak. I haven’t had it in a while, I love the taste. I put mayonnaise and ranch in my mashed potatoes, it makes it creamy. I can’t wait to be able to cook again!!

Given a choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest and why?

If I could have anyone as a dinner guest, it would be Joyce Meyers- she is a Pastor and she goes around the world and preaches Gospel. I would love to sit down with her over Thanksgiving dinner and talk about God and all the good things he does for us, how he gets us through hard times. I saw her in Tennessee at an arena and I looked up at her and said, I love you Joyce!” She looked down at me and said, “I love you too!” It was awesome!!!

What is your greatest accomplishment in life?

One of my greatest accomplishments was receiving my Master Cosmetology license in 2012. School was great, we had a test every Friday and I didn’t fail one test. I love to make people feel good, I love to see people smile after I am done doing their hair. Another one of my greatest accomplishments was getting my GED in 1999.
