Lanika and her family
Lanika Westberry, a mother of five children (her other two children were with a friend at the time of picture) has become homeless and is currently residing at Big Bend Homeless Coalition. Lanika has a steady income in order to pay rent and daily expenses but does not have enough money at one time to pay for the upfront costs of moving into an apartment (first and last month's rent, security deposit, utility deposit and application fees).
Lanika was born in Tallahassee, Florida and is currently 28 years old. She has one brother who is a year younger than her. Lanika lost her first-born child in 2002 to a rare disease known as Fanconi Anemia. In the years following her loss, Lanika was able to have five more children of which she considers to be her biggest blessings in life. She relies on faith to get her through trying times and considers her current situation to be the most humbling of all.
What are you most grateful for?
“Considering the situation I am currently in, most would hold the perspective that it is the worst thing that could possibly happen to anybody. Yes, the situation I am in is a tough one, but it has humbled me and brought me to realize that I should be grateful for everything that I have, including those who have helped me at the Hope Community of Big Bend. I am also grateful for being placed in this situation because it has shifted my focus back to providing a great life for my children who are my primary focus in life.”
