“I have been homeless since 2016. I struggled with some mental illness, but am currently working with case managers at Apalachee who have helped me greatly. Living at The Kearney Center can be stressful with sharing a room with so many different women. Between my case managers at Apalachee and The Kearney Center, I am confident that my mental health will continue to improve, and I will have ongoing support even after I move into my own apartment.”
Where did you grow up and what did you like about your home town?
“I grew up in Harrisburg, PA, and lived there until I was 29 and moved to Tallahassee. I miss the snow at Christmas, as that was one of my favorite things about living in Harrisburg. The Hersey's Chocolate Factory was one of my favorite places to visit growing up in Harrisburg. I loved getting free Hersey's bars!!”
Do you have any brothers and sisters? Tell us a little about them.
“I come from a family of four children, three brothers and one sister. Sadly, my sister, whom I was closest to passed away. I still have two brothers who both live up north. Now that my sister is gone, I've lost contact with my brothers. I'd love to find their phone numbers and reconnect with them again.
I also had four children of my own. My youngest, a son, died when he was only 19. One of my other sons lives in Tallahassee and the other lives south of Tampa. My only daughter lives in Georgia. I have a grandson that lives in Tallahassee, and I'm grateful that I get to spend time with him. I am also a proud grandma to three grandsons, five granddaughters, and one great grandson.”
Do you have a favorite movie and why?
“My favorite movie is the cartoon version of 101 Dalmations. | love it because it is a cartoon, but watching tv is not something I do a lot of.”
Do you have a favorite type of music and if so what song best represents it to you?
“My favorite music is pop, and my favorite song is I'll Never Forget You. I don't remember who sings it, but I love it because at my age it reminds me of people I will always remember looking back at my life.”
What is your favorite kind of food?
My favorite food is Chinese food, as well as fish. I love the variety at Chinese buffets, because you can always get something different for a great price.
What would be one of your greatest accomplishments?
In my free time, I love to crochet. I love crocheting things for the people that are very special to me. I would love to have a place where I can have my family over to eat and spend time talking to them. When I have time to myself, crocheting something to give to them makes me feel like I have accomplished something.
